The American Psychological Association is pleased to join with the Society for Psychophysiological Research to offer this workshop on Entering the Academic Market Place: A Guide For the Perplexed. An academic career is extremely demanding and extremely rewarding. We trust that you will come away from this experience with a clearer understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented to you as you prepare for an academic career.

Your success in academics is important to you, to your students, to your colleagues, and to the discipline whose knowledge you create, disseminate, and advance. We hope that this workshop will provide you with useful perspectives, answers to questions, and some new insights to help you along the way.

The APA and the SPR are pleased to announce a workshop intended for post docs and advanced graduate students who are about to enter the academic job market. The workshop will:

Examine the diverse nature of the institutions that might be seeking at any time to hire assistant professors;
Review the nature of the academic search process and examine the preparation of the application dossier that will increase the odds of being invited for an interview, including preparation for the interview and the all-important "job-talk";
Consider the negotiations that the successful candidate will be holding with the department chair;
Conclude with a panel of recently hired assistant professors who will discuss their rite of passage into the community of scholars.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

As indicated by the agenda, the workshop will begin at 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 23 and continue until 6:00pm, concluding in time for the opening reception of the SPR meeting. Although this program is intended for new entrants into the job market, all SPR meeting registrants are welcome to attend. There will be no registration fee, and pre-registration is not required. However, if you are interested in attending, we request that you inform us by sending an e-mail to edonchin@uiuc.edu. The number of participants may be limited by the size of the room to a total number of 50. If the number of interested participants exceeds 50, access to the workshop will be given to those whose e-mail message we receive first.
